Rafael Moneo, the multiple sides of an international architect

“It´s always thrilling to get back in Merida, I am truly conscious that this work was essential to launch my career and that it meant the end of my first professional years”. That´s how the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo refers to his first great singular building, the Roman Art National Museum in Merida, Spain (1980-1985).

Dedicated to the memory of his father, in this project Moneo worked with material from just one deposit to transmit us coherently the magnificency of the capital of Extremadura region during the Roman Empire, reinterpreting the Roman architecture at the end of 20th century.

Moneo, impenitent traveller, winner of the “Prince of Asturias” Arts Award in 2012 and Architecture Pritzker Prize in 1996, declares to be convinced of the convenience of moving from a place to another to help getting repeated and foreseeable and, considering the hard scenario that young architects face in Spain, thinks that “traveling is not a bad thing. It can be hurtful to get your degree and be forced to go abroad, but the experience in other countries and have a wider perspective of a professional career, must encourage them to take the trip”.

Projects like the enlargement of the Museum del Prado and the Atocha Railway Station in Madrid, the City Hall in Murcia right in front of the cathedral, the Convention and Congress Palace in Toledo, the Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca, the cathedral of Los Angeles in United States or the Kursaal Convention and Meeting Palace in San Sebastian are live examples of what this master of architecture from Navarra goes on contributing with to the world architecture, sometimes controversial to some people in his proposals but always finally disarming and conciliatory with the environment to which he never tries to impose his point of view beyond the natural conversation between his projects and the spaces, buildings and nature nearby where they must take place.
